The historical urban cartography of Lisbon is part of a research project funded by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology entitled “Visions of Lisbon. Science, technology and medicine and the making of a techno-scientific capital (1840-1940),” project PTDC/IVC-HFC/3122/2014, which took place from 2016 to 2019 (VISLIS for short).
The mapping carried out formalizes the survey of various formal and informal Science, Technology and Medicine (STM) spaces, sites and objects, which existed in Lisbon, from 1840 to 1940. It includes: S&T institutions including formal STM education; Health and hygiene facilities; Popular education initiatives, that is, STM education for all lectures during the 1st Republic (1910-1926); engineering and mobility Infrastructures; the massive expansion of Workers' housing or working class neighbourhoods (called pátios, vilas, and bairros) following urban industrialization; Green infrastructures including tree-lined plantations, gardens and parks, but also amusement parks; and other expressions of STM in the city, like Portuguese pavements, Mathematical games, and Armillary spheres.
